This is a cultural phenomenon! Blacks who live in North American usually pray to white Jesus.
Blacks in Africa, which has a long history of Christianity and one of the oldest churches in the world (in Ethiopia), usually depict Jesus as black. Similarly, Chinese, Mexican, and Vietnamese depictions of Jesus are usually Chinese, Mexican, and Vietnamese.
I think it is more the fact that the overwhelming majority depictions of Jesus are white, rather than Black people believing in a white Jesus.
Christianity was the slave master's religion. They learned it. It's a hangover from white-christian imperialism.
