In a recent conversation, my incoming co–Chief Chaplain of the NYPD, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, and I reflected on the responsibility faith leaders carry during some of New York City’s most difficult moments.

Standing together across religious lines — not only in the aftermath of police shootings, but as a steady, visible presence before and during times of tension — is more than symbolism. It is a public stand against violence and division.

This unity is not reactive; it is intentional. It signals that spiritual leadership must remain present, collaborative, and courageous in the public sphere.
