A MASSIVE ANTI-GOVERNMENT protest movement has again sprung up in Taiwan after yet another food scandal.
Protesters are calling for senior officials to resign because of the scale of the problem.
It started with the discovery that widely used type of cooking oil in Taiwan was contaminated with a cancer-causing chemical.
But then it was gradually revealed that the oil had been used in more than 400 types of product, including instant noodles, ready meals, salad dressings, rice balls, bento boxes and so on.

NOTHING FELT SAFE
In other words, almost everyone would likely have consumed it. Nothing felt safe.
Worst of all, it was revealed to have been used widely in school lunches for no one knew how long.
A local media poll found that more than 60% of people supported the anti-government protests.
Focus Taiwan reported that a Legislative Yuan committee approved a motion proposed by opposition lawmakers calling for resignations of senior officials.
One protest, on July 25, was huge – with organizers saying that 200,000 attended. Further rallies are planned.

ALLIED TO ISRAEL
The Washington-controlled Democratic Progressive Party is deeply unpopular, but scraped back into power with the backing of less than 30% of registered voters, because of disarray among opposition parties.
Taiwan’s DPP is closely allied to Israel, and is erecting a building in the west bank, a Palestinian area that is being gradually taken over by Jewish settlers.

FOOD ISSUES
In 2020, the US-aligned DPP eased restrictions on the import of US pork products containing Ractopamine, a chemical banned in China, European countries, and in some US meat products too.
Since then, there have been regular concerns raised about where the imported pork could be found, and whether it was labelled in a way that Taiwan residents could avoid it.
