"The Path" is the name of this painting and it depicts nothing more than a simple sandy path leading straight ahead through a hilly landscape. Just below the horizon, it loses itself at the right edge of the picture: an almost abstract composition. What at first looks like a smooth surface is of extremely rich painting. It is a painting that achieves a high degree of reality without applying the style of illusion realism, not even impressionism.

Higashiyama Kaii (Japanese 東山 魁夷; 1908-1999) was an internationally renowned Japanese landscape painter in the Nihonga style. Many of his works can be seen in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo as well as in Nagano. After childhood and youth in Kōbe, he completed his studies in Japanese painting at the Tōkyō School of Art, later the Tōkyō School of Art, in 1931. From 1933 to 1935, Kaii studied art history at the University of Berlin and frequently visited the surrounding area to paint the landscape. Higashimaya was impressed by German Romanticism and introduced Caspar David Friedrich to Japan.
