The Painting No One Can Erase — The Lord of Miracles
In today's video, we uncover the extraordinary mystery of the Lord of Miracles (El Señor de los Milagros), one of the most documented and astonishing historical miracles of all time. How did a fragile mud wall, painted by a nameless Angolan slave in 1651, survive three catastrophic earthquakes that literally razed the entire city of Lima, Peru, to the ground?

Historical Sources and Archival Documents
Main Academic Study: "El Señor de los Milagros. Historia, devoción e identidad del Perú" (Fondo Editorial BCP). This monograph brings together studies by the most important Peruvian historians, art historians, and anthropologists (including Ramón Mujica Pinilla), dedicated to the iconographic analysis of the mud wall and the records of the Pachacamilla confraternities.
Official Historiography (José Antonio del Busto Duthurburu): "El Señor de los Milagros de Nazarenas" by the celebrated Peruvian historian José Antonio del Busto. The work thoroughly documents the origin of the Angolan slaves' confraternity (including Pedro Dalcon/Benito) and the social context of 17th-century Lima.
Archival Documents from the Monasterio de las Nazarenas: The Historical Archive of the Discalced Carmelite Nazarenes preserves the original handwritten manuscripts of Sebastián de Antuñano (the promoter who purchased the land after the 1687 earthquake) and of Madre Antonia Lucía del Espíritu Santo. These diaries describe in detail the earthquake damage and the related prodigies.
Historical Earthquake Records of Peru (Seismological Data):
November 13, 1655: Earthquake estimated between 7.0 and 7.5 Mw (moment magnitude) that destroyed much of Lima.
October 20, 1687: Earthquake estimated at a magnitude greater than 8.0 Mw with a tsunami that destroyed the chapel, leading to the creation of the processional canvas copy.
October 28, 1746: Catastrophe estimated at 9.0 Mw magnitude with a tsunami exceeding 20 meters that entirely destroyed the port of Callao and Lima, leaving the sanctuary containing the mud wall intact.
