Parth G | The OTHER Boundary Around a Black Hole - #VeritasiumContest #shorts @ParthGChannel | Uploaded 3 years ago | Updated 7 hours ago
There's another boundary around a black hole that gets overlooked by the Event Horizon, but is just as interesting. #VeritasiumContest #shorts #blackholes #physics
The Stationary Limit Surface can be found outside of a black hole's event horizon, if the black hole is rotating / spinning. Any object that gets closer to the black hole than this boundary, can still escape the hole (because it hasn't yet fallen into the event horizon), but some very strange effects occur here.
Because the black hole is spinning, it literally drags the spacetime around it in the same direction as the rotation. As a result, any object in the ergosphere (region between the event horizon and stationary limit surface) will ALWAYS appear to be moving in the same direction as the black hole's spin. Even if it was going the other way before entering the ergosphere. This effect is known as "frame dragging".
The effect even applies to photons of light! On the stationary limit surface, any photon that was initially moving against the spin of the black hole will appear stationary to observers far away from the black hole - how strange is that?
If you want to know more about spinning black holes, I've made a longer video discussing the basics (and some of the maths behind them too)! Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIbP2Sg8y18
I've also entered this video into the Veritasium Science Communication Competition - I love watching Derek's videos, and thought it'd be fun.
Many of you have asked about the stuff I use to make my videos, so I'm posting some affiliate links here! I make a small commission if you make a purchase through these links.
