With the accumulated wealth more than that of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and the Walton Family combined, John D. Rockefeller (July 8, 1839 – May 23, 1937) was the founder of Mobil Oil and was the the wealthiest American of all time. In his spare time Rockefeller was also the founder of the University of Chicago, Rockefeller University and funded the establishment of Central Philippine University in the Philippines. As a devout Northern Baptist, he adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life (probably explains why he lived until age 97!). He was retired for over 40 years when he died of arteriosclerosis in 1937 at "The Casements", his home in Ormond Beach, Florida.
