Known as the Ice Cream Blonde and Hotty Toddy, Thelma Todd was featured in over 120 films in the 1920s and 30s including the Marx Brothers classics Monkey Business and Horse Feathers, This is the Night opposite a young Cary Grant, The Devils Brothers with Laurel and Hardy and Palooka opposite Jimmy Durante. In 1933, in partnership with film director and occasional lover Roland West, she opened Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Café on Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, California. Along with the roadside café they opened a swankier upstairs nightclub called Joya's. The success of the business led to allegations that organized crime figures (including ex-husband Pat DiCicco and Lucky Luciano) made offers to open a gambling operation afterhours. Thelma refused these offers.

After returning from a party at the Trocadero (where Pat DeCicco was present) in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 16, 1935, Thelma was driven home by her chauffeur who was the last to see her alive. She was discovered by her maid on Monday morning slumped over in the passenger seat of her brown 1934 Lincoln Phaeton convertible, which was parked in a two-car garage about 300 feet above her café and apartment where she lived. Although declared a suicide by the coroner, it was found that Thelma suffered from bruising on the neck, broken ribs, a cut lip and a broken tooth (some reports also say she had a broken nose). She died of carbon monoxide poisoning, however it was discovered that there was still gas in the tank of her car. This means someone had to turn on and turn off the engine before the car ran out of gas on its own.

There was no investigation into her murder and this sordid event will forever remain a mystery in the annuls of Hollywood lore. And while Roland West is said to have made a confession of sorts upon his death bed, few tend to believe it.

Thelma Todd’s cremated remains can be found at Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence, Massachusetts. To find Section 19, Lot 5548 drive to the top of the cemetery to the water tower, drive to the right most section down the hill and four plots into Section 19 you will find the family plot. The former location of her Roadside Café can be found at 17575 Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, California where the exterior still looks the same after 90 years.
