Inside a medieval castle in the Austrian Alps, one of the strangest battles of World War II unfolded during the final days of Nazi Germany.

The prisoners trapped inside were not ordinary captives they were former French prime ministers, generals, politicians, and even tennis champion Jean Borotra, all held as valuable hostages by the SS. As the Third Reich collapsed around them, the castle's guards abandoned their posts, leaving the prisoners exposed to fanatical Waffen-SS units determined to prevent their rescue. What followed was an extraordinary alliance no one could have imagined. American soldiers, Austrian resistance fighters, anti-Nazi Wehrmacht troops, a former SS officer, and the French prisoners themselves joined forces to defend Itter Castle against a determined SS assault.

With a single Sherman tank guarding the gate, ammunition running low, and hundreds of attackers closing in, the defenders fought one final battle just days before Germany's surrender. This is the incredible true story of the Battle of Castle Itter, the only known engagement of World War II where American and German soldiers fought side by side, and the remarkable heroes who put aside old loyalties to stop a greater evil in one of the war's most unbelievable final chapters.
