I've been thinking a lot about the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism. Especially in light of the fact that we apparently have space billionaires now in the form of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos (who, as you'll see are perhaps not our great hope for the future). I wondered whether this "corruption" by capitalism is really as new as we think it is, or whether Premier Cherdenko (admittedly not the most reliable source of information, I guess) was wrong about its relative freedom from that corruption?

In this video I'll be going through all manner of things space, from the very first forays into it by the Soviet Union and the USA complete with my verdict on who really won the Space Race (hint: it wasn't the USA). Including some classic Cold War intrigue.

Then I talk about how space has always been corrupted by capitalism, pretty much from the very moment we started our tentative first steps into exploring and I'll also be telling you about the role Eurovision (yes, really) had to play in the corruption of space by captialism. As well as that I go into how even in our imaginations (yes, that includes Red Alert too) it's been corrupted. Whether it's the relatively "clean" depictions of space colonisation in games like Mass Effect or the exploitative and extractive element to 4X games such as Galactic Civilizations.

There are also some critiques of people and other YouTube channels whose output I generally enjoy (at least some of the time) including Aaron Bastani's Fully Automated Luxury Communism (or FALC, if you prefer) and the similarities between that and Kurzgesagt's own videos on space colonisation.

I also try to address the question that's been on my mind since I was a little nerd playing 4X games and space sims like Freelancer. Is space worth it? I'm not really sure I came to a definitive conclusion on that one, but one thing that I'm certain of is that the Elon Musks and Jeff Bezos's of the world can't be allowed to lead the way on that. Otherwise we'll be doomed to replication of capitalism for all time.

And yes, this entire video is based of the Cherdenko quote from Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3. I think it's not the worst way to decide video topics as it turns out.

I also offer a slightly controversial opinion on the Federation in Star Trek, which you can hear me talking about with my friends at Podcasting is Praxis here: praxiscast.podbean.com/e/episode-48-hey-jackin-it-on-the-holodeck
