Stealth might not have changed as obviously as the FPS, horror, adventure and RPG genres, but it definitely took a turn in the late 90s and early 2000s, going from the old kind of stealth formed by the likes of Thief: Gold, to the new kind formed by Metal Gear Solid.

Developed by Looking Glass Studios in 1998, Thief: The Dark Project became an instant classic. Yet, over time, its influence began to wane in the genre it helped create, instead becoming an inspiration for non-stealth games, such as Penumbra, Amnesia and SOMA.
