In Medina, the old town of Tunis, many cultural traditions merged under Islamic auspices: those of Berbers, Arabs, Turks and Spanish Muslims. But Jewish traders and Christian sailors also left their mark. From the 12th to the 16th century, Tunis was one of the largest and richest cities in the Islamic world. Palaces, mosques, mausoleums, residential buildings, and markets under arcades. A total of around 700 monuments still bear witness to a great past. The most important building is the centrally located Zitouna (olive tree) mosque. It was founded in the 8th century by Arab conquerors and the columns of the prayer hall originate from ancient Carthage. Today, medina is the largest preserved old town in North Africa. The film, shot in 2003, shows Tunis during Ramadan.

The Muslim month of fasting is strictly observed here. No one is seen eating, drinking or smoking during the day, life is very subdued, the alleyways are emptier than usual and offer a clear view of the architecture of the medina. In Ramadan, life happens at night. As soon as the fasting commandment can be broken after sunset, families serve a sumptuous dinner. Afterwards, people head out into the alleyways, stroll through the bazaar and meet up in the cafés around the Zitouna mosque.

UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images.
