wocomoTRAVEL | The Bridge at Mostar - An Arch over a Gorge, Bosnia-Herzegovina | Treasures of the World @wocomoTRAVEL | Uploaded December 2023 | Updated October 2024, 21 hours ago.
It is one of the world's treasures, but it is not just an architectural monument. It is humanity's heritage in a double sense: a monument to architecture and a symbol of destruction. "Stari Most", the old bridge in the Bosnian city of Mostar. And it is a symbol of “reconstruction.” The bridge gave the city its name, in the local language the bridge is called "Most", and the bridge guards were called "Mostari". The high-arched, stone arch over the Neretwa River made the city of Mostar an important and wealthy place.
The "Stari Most" connected the hinterland with the Adriatic. But one date is burned into the memory of the residents of Mostar: November 9, 1993. On that day, Croatian artillery shells brought down the world-famous monument, the most beautiful bridge in the Balkans. For many residents, it wasn't just a bridge arch that collapsed, their world collapsed.

The elegant bridge has been part of everyday life for the residents of Mostar for 450 years. It was built in 1566. After years of international collaboration, a copy of the destroyed original has now been made stone by stone. The Mostar Bridge is the first UNESCO World Heritage treasure where the world organization went beyond its original objective. Not only did it preserve a World Heritage monument, it also supported the reconstruction of a destroyed monument. Even if the visible wound from the civil war in July 2004 was closed with the reconstruction of the bridge, it will still be a long time before the abyss is bridged.
UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images.
