Larva eels are the first stage of the life cycle of eels and other fish in the superorder Elopomorpha. They are also called leptocephalus, which means “slim head” in Greek, because they have flat and transparent bodies with thin heads Larva eels can grow to much larger sizes than most fish larvae and have long larval periods of about three months to more than a year. They feed on tiny particles floating freely in the ocean, which are often referred to as marine snow Larva eels undergo a striking metamorphosis involving shrinkage to about half the maximum larval size. They then transform into the juvenile glass eel stage that resembles the adult form Larva eels are present worldwide in the oceans from southern temperate to tropical latitudes, where adult eels and their close relatives live.
