The Nuremberg Raid in Cultural Memory 80 years on
With Dan Ellin

In today's show we examine the disastrous Bomber Command operation to Nuremberg 30/31 March 1944 in which 95 aircraft were lost and 545 airmen were killed. Although not as well-known as the Dams raid or Dresden, the events on the last night of March 1944 played an important role in framing the way Bomber Command is remembered today. Using interviews from the IBCC Digital Archive, Dan's talk will combine his current research on the myth of ‘Scarecrow Shells’, with his previous work on lack of moral fibre (LMF). As well as Martin Middlebrook’s Nuremberg Raid (1973) and John Nichol’s The Red Line (2014), he'll consider representations of the operation including Peter Durrant’s BBC2 TV drama The Brylcreem Boys (1979) starring Timothy Spall and David Threfall, and Conrad’s War, the wonderous children’s book by Andrew Davies (1978). Rather than presenting a descriptive narrative of what happened and why, after setting the context of the events and the horrendous loses, he'll consider the historiography, and focus in particular on how the operation has been remembered in popular culture.

Dan Ellin is a graduate of the University of Lincoln and has a PhD from the University of Warwick. He curated the exhibition at the International Bomber Command Centre and continues to work building an inclusive, open-access digital archive that includes over 1,100 newly created oral history interviews with veterans and survivors of the bombing war.
