The battle for Saipan is remembered as one of the bloodiest battles fought in the Pacific and visible reminders of the devastation still exist. One can find human remains scattered on the jungle floor or in caves throughout the island. Emotional reminders still exist as well, for both the soldiers and the civilians who survived the battle. In this show, the survivors of Saipan, including Pacific Islanders on whose land the Americans and Japanese fought their war, have the opportunity to tell their stories in their own words, as read and discussed by historian Bruce Petty.
Bruce M. Petty grew up in California, and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves at Alameda Naval Air Station in 1962, while still in high school. After graduation from high school, he served two years aboard USS Yorktown, CVS-10, as an aviation ordnancman, and is a Vietnam War veteran. He graduated from the University of California with a degree in history in 1972. In 1995, along with his wife and children, he moved to Saipan in the Mariana Islands, returning to California in 2000.
