This is an educational Vocal Coach analysis of “Who’s Lovin’ You” by The Jackson 5, featuring lead vocals from Michael Jackson as a child. After the release of the recent Biopic I had to check it out. The track was a B-Side to “I Want You Back” from their 1969 debut album “Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5.” Released by Motown Records, this soul ballad introduced the world to an astonishing lead singer: Michael Jackson, just 11 years old, with emotional depth far beyond his years. Witten by Smokey Robinson and originally released by The Miracles, “Who’s Lovin’ You” blends pop, R&B, and gospel influences into something unforgettable.
In this vocal analysis, we explore how Michael’s voice carries an almost impossible duality: the anatomy of a child, with the emotional phrasing, grit, and interpretive maturity of a seasoned soul singer. We break down Michael’s remarkable overtone richness (as seen in Spectrogram!), effortless riffs and runs, subtle breathiness, even vibrato and even the use of a little distortion at age 11!
