Dunkirk is Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. The soldiers are the townsfolk, trapped and helpless. The monster comes from the sky, swoops down without warning, and leaves them no way to fight back. The working title gave it away, if you knew where to look: Bodega Bay, the exact town where Hitchcock shot The Birds.
Then there's the ticking under every scene. It's a real watch, and it belongs to Nolan himself. There's a Spitfire that isn't a Spitfire. A camera that sank to the bottom of the sea and came back with the shot still on it. And a sound so terrifying that the men who survived the beach could still hear it seventy years later.
This is the story of how Nolan spent twenty years, one near drowning in the Channel, and a 76 page script turning the century's most important rescue into a horror film disguised as a history lesson.
