Jacksonville University is home to Florida’s first NROTC unit, established over 50 years ago. Tristan Nickerson, a kinesiology student and soon-to-be officer in the Marines was recruited to Jacksonville University’s Division I rowing team out of high school and enjoyed being challenged. So, he joined the NROTC. Through Jacksonville University’s naval training officer program, he was offered a scholarship, and after graduating from the marine officer candidate school, Tristan is continuing his career in the Marines. NROTC students choose their major and complete required coursework alongside naval science courses and drill sessions. When NROTC students complete their degrees, they are commissioned into the United States Navy or the United States Marine Corps.
