It wasn’t until writer, cinematographer and director Warwick Thornton arrived on set that the realisation of having to work with inexperienced child actors sunk in.
“I wrote a film about eight children. What was I thinking?” Thornton muses. “And then they do one scene and I’d go, ‘Oh, my God! Thank you, Universe! These kids are amazing.’”
In this behind-the-scenes video, Thornton discusses the film’s 18-year journey to the big screen, the surprising ease that came with casting the film and why he chose the small town of Burra in South Australia as the film’s location.
