The Neon Philharmonic is a minor footnote in the annals of American music these days. But back in 1969/1970, they were a huge band thanks to the success of their debut single "Morning Girl," as well as subsequent singles like "Heighdy-Ho Princess." Though their albums didn't receive the same level of adoration in their day, they have since gone on to garner a cult following all the same. The story of this gifted band and how they lost their way has been front-loaded in the reporting department, with their Canadian chapter mostly left out of the equation. I aim to fix that, but first, a little backstory.
The Neon Philharmonic began in Nashville during 1968. Keyboardist/composer Tupper Saussy and vocalist Don Gant met in Nashville and began working together on material. Don's brother, Ron, was also partially involved, helping to shape the sound of the group's early material from a production standpoint.
The members of Neon Philharmonic (Tupper and Don) were talented members of the Nashville music community during the 1960s. Tupper was an accomplished composer and keyboardist, recording multiple albums of his own compositions and working with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. While Don was an accomplished producer.
Tupper Saussy was commissioned by the NSO to compose a piano concerto for the 1969 concert season, and this work eventually morphed into the material for The Neon Philharmonic's debut album "Moth Confesses.”
During the early months of 1969, The Neon Philharmonic was signed to Warner Bros. Records after a successful demo submission. They hired the Nashville Symphony Orchestra to provide musical backing throughout their recordings. Two albums and a few extra songs for singles were recorded. The musical style is 60s symphonic pop with hints of psychedelia.
