Napoleon Bonaparte took power in 1799 and after the breakdown of the Treaty of Amiens, a number of Coalitions fought against Napoleon to prevent his European dominance. The Third, Fourth and Fifth Coalition were seriously defeated by Napoleon and his Grande Armée, yet after Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, the Sixth Coalition forced Napoleon's first abdication in 1814. Napoleon did return in 1815, yet he was eventually defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
