The Crusades were a series of attacks launched by the Pope against the spread of Islam. The first crusade in 1095 was successful in the capture of both Antioch and Jerusalem, yet the following crusades mainly saw the success of the Middle Eastern dynasties and the failures of the Christians. Overall however, the crusades were influential in spreading Christianity and enhancing the power of the Pope.
