Usually leaves have a protective white wax layer to protect them from overheating in the sun. But in the white ash (Fraxinus americana), the white color is on the bottom side. Nobody knows why, but perhaps it is because when the leaf wilts on a hot day, it turns over, and it is on those days that the white color protects the leaf.
