In order to reconcile after World War II, both Germany and France had to give up something. Germany surrendered, and gave up its dream of world domination. France gave up its understandable desire to take revenge on Germany. Each side giving up something was the first step in forming a European Union that persists to this day as an exemplar of peace and love.
