Hidden along Highway 79 in San Diego County is Santa Ysabel Asistencia, a small mission outpost with a history that stretches back more than 200 years.
This quiet spot has connections to the Battle of San Pasqual, the Mormon Battalion, and even Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of Sacagawea who traveled across the country as a baby with the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
But its strangest story involves two historic mission bells, one dating all the way back to 1723. In 1926, both bells mysteriously disappeared. Their clappers were found nearby, but the bells themselves were gone.
Nearly a century later, pieces of the missing bells have surfaced, along with an incredible story that may finally explain what happened to them.
