It was November 10, 2004, Bellavia’s 29th birthday, and he was spending it alone, clearing an enemy bunker deep inside Fallujah.
As soon as Staff Sergeant David Bellavia stepped into the room, the insurgent lunged at him.
The two men collided in a violent, close-quarters brawl.
They clawed, slammed, and grappled across the dusty floor until Bellavia drew his knife and ended the fight with a final strike.
Still shaking, he stepped outside. The streets lay in ruins. He was the last line holding the city from falling.
Bellavia stripped off his helmet and lit a cigarette. But as the first drag touched his lips, a shadow dropped from above, and an insurgent landed in the courtyard, weapon in hand, ready to finish what the last one couldn’t.
This wasn’t the birthday gift Bellavia had hoped for.
