Dan Daly, five feet five inches tall and 132 pounds, stood alone as hundreds of Boxer rebels scaled the stonework below him. They were coming for the dozens of diplomats and civilians seeking shelter in the American legation behind him.
His bolt-action rifle crackled in the darkness without rest. When ammunition ran low, he used the bayonet. When attackers reached the top, he used his fists. For forty-eight hours in July 1900, he held the position. No water. No relief. No retreat.
