Mahishasur Mardini Stotram
Sri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram was composed by the great sage Adi Shankaracharya two thousand years back. Sri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is based on Devi Mahatmyam in which Devi takes the forms of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati to slay demons Madhu and Kaitabha, Mahishasura, and Sumbha and Nisumbha. In the twelveth chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam the Goddess herself ordered to sing this song during festivals: “The place, where Sri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is sung every day, I will always be present and never leave.”. Maa Durga is the primitive source of all power; she is residing with many qualities and powers and known by various names. Mahishasura was the king of Asura who defeated the Gods and driven them out of Heaven. The main Purpose of Sri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is to worship Shakti and express all her powers and show how she defeated demon Mahishasura. It is believed that the chanting of Sri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram religiously and with full faith is equivalent to chanting the entire Devi Mahatmayam. The Stotra can also be chanted during Navratri (9 Nights of Goddess Durga).
