I started the year with the goal of finally finishing my fantasy hot mess. I've written this book twice now, and am currently working on the third draft, but I keep starting to write and then getting stopped, and I haven't been able to figure out why.
So I started writing a summary of everything that was happening in my book to see where the gaps were, and I discovered two common questions popped up:
- Why?
- Why now?
Why are my characters doing this? Why do they want to do it? And why are they doing it NOW, versus yesterday, or five years ago, or five years from now?
More often than not, my answer was: 'because plot!' Because I wanted the characters in a certain place so they could meet other characters and the story could get started. The problem with this approach, is it means things keep happening in my story that don't seem to have any logic or reason behind them.
So here I try to explain why these two questions are so important for writers, and how they relate to my book. It's a bit of a ramble!
