A seemingly healthy man had a brain scan - which revealed that most of his skull is filled with fluid. How is it possible that this man, who "lacked 90% of his brain" had no symptoms? And can we use this example to understand how the brain, neurogenesis, and synaptogenesis work and how we can keep the brain healthy? This is the story of a medical wonder that helps us to understand how neurogenesis and synaptogenesis work.

In early childhood, the brain experiences rapid growth, generating new cells and forming connections that enable essential skills like walking and talking. During this adaptable phase, neurogenesis (making new brain cells or neurons) and synaptogenesis (connecting brain cells) are highly active. Neurogenesis and Synaptogenesis can also make the brain adapt to damages, as it has been seen in the patients who suffered from non-communicating hydrocephalus or brain damage following an accident.

Especially synaptogenesis can help us to keep our brains healthy. Supporting brain health relies on staying mentally active, managing stress, and engaging in regular exercise. Learning new skills, like a second language or an instrument, strengthens brain connections and reduces dementia risk. Chronic stress, however, can thin brain areas tied to decision-making and increase Alzheimer’s risk, but activities like meditation can counteract these effects. Physical exercise, especially aerobics, boosts memory, executive function, and may protect against dementia by enhancing blood flow and brain metabolism. While lifestyle habits don’t eliminate dementia risk, they greatly reduce it, helping keep the brain sharp and adaptable as we age.
