The search of the most beautiful village is like aiming to find the holy grail. I think I found one of Indonesia’s most beautiful villages upon my visit to Western Sumatra. Down in Solok Selatan, there is a village full of traditional Minangkabau houses. It’s name is KAWASAN SARIBU RUMAH GADANG. It is about 5 hours away from Padang by car, thus staying overnight is required. The way is long, but there are several things to see: The tea plantations (Kebun Teh Danau Kembar) and the two lakes at Danau Kembar: The Danau di Atas and Danau di Bawah. Afterwards, it’s still quite a long drive until you reach Kawasan Nagari Saribu Rumah Gadang. The village has indeed countless of traditional rumah gadang houses, which are very stereotypical for the Minangkabau people. These houses have these pointy roofs symbolizing the horns of water buffaloes. The village was very quiet and the climate is mild, thus not hot and humid. This marks a big contrast to the otherwise hot weather at the town of Padang. Make sure to spend at least 3 hours at the village for exploration, better 4. You can book a Silat and Randai show that the local association is going to perform. Silat is a martial art withspread in the Indomalay archipelago region. Also make sure to spend your night at one of the local home stays. This will give you the opportunity to see how life in a traditional rumah gadang Minangkabau is going to be like. Enjoy the flavors of the local food served by the hosts. There is also a small rumah gadang museum that should be visited. Interesting are also the Minangkabau-style mosques that follow the architecture of pagodas. This makes the mosques look very southeast Asian. In conclusion: Kawasan Nagari Saribu Rumah Gadang is certainly one of the most beautiful villages of Indonesia!

May is a very interesting month, it’s not peak season yet. With choosing to travel during May, you have definitely made a great choice. May has several advantages over other months: It’s getting warmer, the days are long, you can do again a lot of activities. May is mid-spring, it’s the transition from Spring towards Summer. You will still be able to get a glimpse of the blossoms, depending on how cold March and April have been. The weather and the look of the landscape during May is very much determined by April. If April is cold, May is going to be rather like a usual April and Spring will be delayed into May. As May is still mid-Spring you may get a last chance to experience a glimpse of Winter up in the Swiss Alps. There will still be snow, in certain places, you even can go to ski. Down in the Swiss plateau, you will see the nice contrast of the green landscape and the snow mountains. Spring vibes down in the cities like Lucerne or Zürich and wintery Swiss Alps, all in one photo! As May is proceeding, it’s getting warmer and you may even experience early Summer vibes. In terms of tourism, May is already considered beginning of Summer season, which allows you to do a lot of things. Although many attractions are going to open up during May, not everything is going to be open as it’s still mid-Spring. In particular up in the Swiss Alps, many attractions may still be closed. Overall in May it’s getting warmer; on certain days, you can already walk around in shorts and slippers. Switzerland is full of amazing valleys. Each valley has its unique characteristics such as architecture, culture, landscape and food. In this video, the Top 3 Valleys of Switzerland are being presented in detail. The Val Bavona is a very raw and mystical valley in the Canton of Ticino. The Val Bavona is known for its village of Foroglio and the many unique raw stone houses that were built beneath the rocks that the locals call Splüi. The Val Bavona is full of wonderful villages like Forolgio, Sonlerto, Sabbione, Fontana and San Carlo. The Val Bavona is worth to be explored for about 2 days. Also visit the Foroglio waterfall that is considered a highlight in this Swiss valley. The Simmental is often named as the greenest valley of Switzerand and even of Europe. The Simmental is the home to two of the top 10 waterfalls of Switzerland: The Siebenbrunnen and the Iffigfall. The Siebenbrunnen is a branched waterfall that can be accessed by hiking up from Lenk for about 40 minutes. A highlight of the Simmental is the house trail at where you can see the many beautiful homes that are decorated with plenty of paintings and prayers. Beautiful villages to visit are Boltigen, Erlenbach and Oberwil. At Oberwil there is also a suspension bridge that takes you to the Weissburg Bad. The Schächental is in the Canton of Uri and hosts one of the most beautiful treasures of the Swiss Alps. This would be the Staubifall (Stäuber) that is one of the most photographed subjects of Switzerland on Instagram. Many travelers admire the Schächental as it is raw, green and looks like post cards.

Engelberg is one of the most touristy places in Switzerland. This is because of Mount Titlis that is quite accessible from various parts of Switzerland and thus perfect for a one-day trip. Engelberg lays in the Canton of Obwalden and is only 1 hour from Zurich and 30 minutes from Lucerne. There are 3 gondolas to be taken to access Mount Titlis. The last gondola has a rotating cabin, which is something very unique in the Swiss Alps. Once on the top, there will be a fantastic vista over various snow-covered peaks. You can see the Alps of 5 cantons: Lucerne, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Berne and Uri. There is also a skywalk bridge as one of the major attractions up on the summit, entry is free of charge. The best part is at the Trübsee. Once arrived down there after taking two cabin rides, you can go for snow tubing. This again is free as it is included in your ticket to access mount Titlis. The snowtubing is very fun. Over roughly 150 meters, you will slide down around a high curve at where you can take a small lift to go up again. There are no limits of how many runs you want to go for.

West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat) – the Land of the Minangkabau – was THE discovery of the year. I have traveled much, but since my visit to Bangladesh, I have not come accross any place that was so raw! Bukittinggi is so rich in culture and at the same time very underrated. Yet, it is truly wonderful Indonesia! The best thing: there are barely any tourists.
Because Bukittinggi is yet not very touristy, it remains relatively cheap. I have spent only 150 SGD in 4 days (450 MYR or 110 USD). This included the hotels, food, national park and island entrance feed, as well as the daily costs of 550’000 IDR (38 USD) for the driver.
The best things that you can do around Bukittinggi are visiting the Rumah Gadang Minangkabau, Istano Basa Pagaruyung, Sianok Valley (ngarai sianok), Anai Waterfall, Japanese Tunnel, Lake Maninjau, Jam Gadang and the Jambatan Limpapeh. There is surely a lot more to discover, this for another trip! For sure I will travel there again! Thus, this video is my first Travel Guide for this region around Bukittinggi in West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat)

The Canton of Valais is one of the most visited regions in all of Switzerland. Valais is the home to the iconic Matterhorn, many beautiful villages, great viewpoints and to a fascinating culture. There are many great attractions to be visited in this wonderful canton. This video summarizes the Top ten attractions in the canton of Valais / Wallis. The Goms bridge is one of the most photographed suspension bridges of Switzerland. It is completely free to visit and perfect to combine with a visit to the villages nearby. The Goms bridge should be definitely included if you are traveling over the Furka to Zermatt. Saas-Fee, the filming location of “Last Christmas” is one of the most visited Winter villages in all of Switzerland. The town is exciting to visit during Summer and Winter. Saas-Fee is not only great for skiing but also for families, as there is a lot to do in this village. The entire village is car-free, it’s nice to roam around the many traditional houses. You can try going up to the Mittelallalin to the world’s highest located revolving restaurant, visit the ice pavilion, the largest manmade glacier cave in the world or go for a ski down hill; this during Winter and even Summer! The Gorge du Durnand is a canyon / gorge with multiple waterfalls and a steep ascent. It’s one of the most thrilling and most beautiful gorges you could visit in Switzerland, and is even very budget traveler friendly. The Lac de Tanay is one of the secret lakes in the Canton of Valais. From Miex, you need to go for a steep hike and then you will arrive at this very humble, peaceful lake Lac de Tanay. It is nicely embedded into the Swiss Alps and thus makes a perfect sanctuary. The underground Lake (Lac Souterrain) of Saint-Léonard is one of the most important wonders of nature of the Canton of Valais. The lake is 300 meters long and is the largest underground lake of Europe. This is certainly a very highlight in the Canton of Valais, but you will have to prebook your visit. The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Canton of Wallis, Switzerland and even of the Alps! You can get brilliant views from multiple points: The Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and the Eggishorn. The best impression would be from the Eggishorn, as from there, you will get a perfect view over the bend of the king of the Alps and you can even see the Jungfraujoch. This is also a quite cheap place to visit for budget travelers. The hiking trail along the Bisse du Milieu and Bisse Vieux of Nendaz is a great and totally free attraction for anybody who loves to connect to nature. These hiking trails are so refreshing, which is why they are often called healing trails. In here, you can experience true beauty, perfect for budget traveling in Switzerland. The Mont-Fort at Verbier offers you a 360° panorama over the Swiss Alps as well as the Alps of France and Italy. You can see the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, two important summits of the Alps. Try out the zipline, the highest located zipline in Europe; it’s going to be thrilling and pure adrenaline! Zermatt is always a favorite destination in the Canton of Wallis. You will get many great views over the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat, Rothorn, Kleinmatterhorn and the village itself. Zermatt’s village is touristy but also traditional and relaxing. Visit the ice cave at the Kleinmatterhorn or go for the 5 lakes hike. There is surely more than enough to do up there! Grimentz is no doubt the most beautiful village in the Canton of Valais and one of the best Swiss villages overall. Grimentz is traditional, full of wooden houses and just very stereotypically Swiss! Walk in the many beautiful alleys and immerse yourself into this wonderful alpine village!
