I slept in one of the most unique Winter Hotels in all of Switzerland: at the Igludorf in Zermatt. Up on 2700 meters above sea level, you can stay overnight inside a real igloo and enjoy a different kind of accommodation. The Igloo hotel is very much hyped on Instagram, but how is it actually to eventually go there to stay overnight?
You need to travel to Zermatt by train and then take the Gornergrat railway to Rotenboden. What is very important, you need to travel light, just bring one rucksack, no classic luggage. The hotel will fetch you at a given time from Rotenboden station and then take you to the Igludorf. You will be shown the entire hotel, including the suite that comes along with a whirlpool and a wonderful Matterhorn view. Usually online, you will see the suite only, in reality the other rooms are smaller and do not have any whirlpool. Yet, you still can enjoy a spa up there, but you have to share it with the rest. The igloo hotel changes its theme every year, they have beautiful ice and snow carvings that make it very inviting. Each of the rooms has different motifs, usually they show typical ones that you can find allover Switzerland and especially Valais. After enjoying a great sunset, you will be having dinner with everyone, good time to network, and later, you can enjoy stargazing as the sky up on that altitude is very clear. After, it’s time to go to sleep. The room is quite cold, you will be staying inside a sleep sack. Quite a different kind of experience, how it exactly is, you will find out after I woke up. On your next day, head out for skiing or enjoy the beautiful resort at Zermatt before you are heading elsewhere.

West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat) – the Land of the Minangkabau – was THE discovery of the year. I have traveled much, but since my visit to Bangladesh, I have not come accross any place that was so raw! Bukittinggi is so rich in culture and at the same time very underrated. Yet, it is truly wonderful Indonesia! The best thing: there are barely any tourists.
Because Bukittinggi is yet not very touristy, it remains relatively cheap. I have spent only 150 SGD in 4 days (450 MYR or 110 USD). This included the hotels, food, national park and island entrance feed, as well as the daily costs of 550’000 IDR (38 USD) for the driver.
The best things that you can do around Bukittinggi are visiting the Rumah Gadang Minangkabau, Istano Basa Pagaruyung, Sianok Valley (ngarai sianok), Anai Waterfall, Japanese Tunnel, Lake Maninjau, Jam Gadang and the Jambatan Limpapeh. There is surely a lot more to discover, this for another trip! For sure I will travel there again! Thus, this video is my first Travel Guide for this region around Bukittinggi in West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat)

The Canton of Valais is one of the most visited regions in all of Switzerland. Valais is the home to the iconic Matterhorn, many beautiful villages, great viewpoints and to a fascinating culture. There are many great attractions to be visited in this wonderful canton. This video summarizes the Top ten attractions in the canton of Valais / Wallis. The Goms bridge is one of the most photographed suspension bridges of Switzerland. It is completely free to visit and perfect to combine with a visit to the villages nearby. The Goms bridge should be definitely included if you are traveling over the Furka to Zermatt. Saas-Fee, the filming location of “Last Christmas” is one of the most visited Winter villages in all of Switzerland. The town is exciting to visit during Summer and Winter. Saas-Fee is not only great for skiing but also for families, as there is a lot to do in this village. The entire village is car-free, it’s nice to roam around the many traditional houses. You can try going up to the Mittelallalin to the world’s highest located revolving restaurant, visit the ice pavilion, the largest manmade glacier cave in the world or go for a ski down hill; this during Winter and even Summer! The Gorge du Durnand is a canyon / gorge with multiple waterfalls and a steep ascent. It’s one of the most thrilling and most beautiful gorges you could visit in Switzerland, and is even very budget traveler friendly. The Lac de Tanay is one of the secret lakes in the Canton of Valais. From Miex, you need to go for a steep hike and then you will arrive at this very humble, peaceful lake Lac de Tanay. It is nicely embedded into the Swiss Alps and thus makes a perfect sanctuary. The underground Lake (Lac Souterrain) of Saint-Léonard is one of the most important wonders of nature of the Canton of Valais. The lake is 300 meters long and is the largest underground lake of Europe. This is certainly a very highlight in the Canton of Valais, but you will have to prebook your visit. The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Canton of Wallis, Switzerland and even of the Alps! You can get brilliant views from multiple points: The Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and the Eggishorn. The best impression would be from the Eggishorn, as from there, you will get a perfect view over the bend of the king of the Alps and you can even see the Jungfraujoch. This is also a quite cheap place to visit for budget travelers. The hiking trail along the Bisse du Milieu and Bisse Vieux of Nendaz is a great and totally free attraction for anybody who loves to connect to nature. These hiking trails are so refreshing, which is why they are often called healing trails. In here, you can experience true beauty, perfect for budget traveling in Switzerland. The Mont-Fort at Verbier offers you a 360° panorama over the Swiss Alps as well as the Alps of France and Italy. You can see the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, two important summits of the Alps. Try out the zipline, the highest located zipline in Europe; it’s going to be thrilling and pure adrenaline! Zermatt is always a favorite destination in the Canton of Wallis. You will get many great views over the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat, Rothorn, Kleinmatterhorn and the village itself. Zermatt’s village is touristy but also traditional and relaxing. Visit the ice cave at the Kleinmatterhorn or go for the 5 lakes hike. There is surely more than enough to do up there! Grimentz is no doubt the most beautiful village in the Canton of Valais and one of the best Swiss villages overall. Grimentz is traditional, full of wooden houses and just very stereotypically Swiss! Walk in the many beautiful alleys and immerse yourself into this wonderful alpine village!

Zürich is full of beautiful Christmas markets! There are so many, that you would need a whole afternoon to explore them all. The first market that you need to visit is the Weihnachtsdorf at the Sechseläuten square near Bellevue. It’s a yearly market with a festive lighting decoration and plenty of stalls. The market is quite foodie, so consider going there for dinner. There are smaller markets just nearby, for example just at the Grossmünster and then inside the Niederdörfli, the old city of Zürich. The market and especially the lighting decorations are very charming. It’s going to feel very cozy. Walk around the old city, explore the many alleys to enjoy the wonderful Christmas lights. Very nice is the market at the Fraumünster square. This market is rather small but feels very joyous due to the many houses being lit up beautifully. Important points of interest with beautiful lights are at the Hotel Storchen, the Augustinergasse, Rennweg, Parade square and Bahnhofstrasse. The lightings along the Bahnhofstrasse are called Lucy and have been fascinating the locals for over 10 years. There is also the fairytale tram that provides a small city tour for the kids, accompanied by Santa and his angels. The tour starts at the Bellevue at where you also can buy tickets. Another major market is the Christkindl market at Zürich HB (Zurich main station). It’s a rather traditional one, full of stall that sell handmade products and Christmas gifts. Very fascinating is the large Christmas tree with the many Swarovski diamonds. The most beautiful lighting decoration you will however get at the National Museum at the Illuminarium. This market is very festive and modern, even the Christmas tree there is made out of wood. Enjoy the light show of the Art festival, which you will have to pay entry for.
