Makariv is a village located about 50 km from Kyiv, which was on the route of the Russian army during its offensive on the capital and was heavily damaged during the fighting and occupation that lasted from late February to April 2022. Almost 30% of all buildings in the village were destroyed or damaged, most of them being residential structures. The Russians also destroyed buildings of preschools, schools, colleges, a library, a private hospital, two museums, a church, a radio tower, many grocery stores, catering establishments, and more. Industrial infrastructure, administrative buildings, and facilities for electricity, gas, heat, and water supply also suffered damage.
After the liberation, the Makariv community gradually began to rebuild. As part of the Restoration project, we highlight the new Makariv outpatient clinic, funded by the Kyiv School of Economics, the permanent housing for elderly internally displaced persons called Chudo Mistechko (The Miracle Town), sponsored by the Dell Loy Hansen Foundation, and the initiative of local SES employee Hennadii Pohorelov, the Rebuild Makariv charity foundation.
