Bakhchysarai is a Ukrainian city in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, situated in the valley of the Churuk-Su river in the Crimean Mountains' inner ridge. Bakhchisarai translates from Crimean Tatar as “Garden-Palace” (bağça — garden, saray — palace). This small, cosy, and picturesque city was loved by tourists. People came here to get acquainted with the Crimean Tatar culture, explore historical monuments, in particular the Khan's Palace and the “cave city” of Chufut-Kale, admire the scenery of the mountains, savour traditional Crimean Tatar cuisine, and taste the wines made by local winemakers. Bakhchysarai was also a popular destination for rock climbers because there were routes for both beginners and more experienced athletes.
Bakhchysarai and the entire Crimean Peninsula have been temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation since 2014. Many local residents were forced to leave their hometown because they could not tolerate the “Russian world” in their homeland. Many of them now continue to fight in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, help as volunteers or fight at the informational frontline, and try in every possible way to bring closer the day when Bakhchysarai gets back to Ukraine.
