The night of the 25th of November 1120, saw a disaster described as the medieval Titanic, a tragedy that would spectacularly change the course of European history. The White Ship cast off from the French port of Barfleur, carrying about 300 passengers. On board were numerous Norman big-shots along with 17-year-old William Adelin, the only legitimate son of King Henry II and heir to the English throne. As the following morning dawned, the ship had sunk below the freezing water, drowning almost everyone on board and leaving just one survivor, a lowly butcher from Rouen, to bear witness to the disaster.
