To uncover the mechanisms of cell competition, the Cell Fitness group studies its role in processes such as aging, development, tissue regeneration and cancer.
We made a set of animations for MorenoLab of the Champalimaud Foundation. To create these animations, we made 3 different models that mimic the competitive behavior of the cells:
1. Competition for space
We see many cells, a new cell appears in the middle and this cell is resistant to apoptosis. This cell grows and multiplies and pushes the others away. At the same time we see cells die.
2. Competition for resources
We see many cells, a new cell appears in the middle and this cell is resistant to apoptosis. At some point, particles representing resources will appear. The stronger cells grow and multiply toward these sources, making it difficult for other cells to reach the sources. These cells eventually die.
3. Fitness fingerprints
We see many cells and then a new cell appears in the middle. This cell can sense the existence of certain membrane proteins in the membrane of neighboring cells. If these proteins are absent, a signal is sent that activates the activation of the caspase pathway (represented by particles moving from winner cells to loser cells). We see these loser cells die.
