The Materia in this cocktail actually augments its flavor
I vaguely remember when I first learned about the Blue Materia cocktail inspired by Final Fantasy VII. Visually, it was stunning: a crystal-clear drink seemingly housing a bright neon blue orb right in the center. It took quite a bit of sleuthing to finally find a recipe referencing how it was made, and once I did, I wanted to take things up a notch.
At least according to the recipe I found, the drink is essentially a Gimlet with blue curaçao involved. Gin, lime, syrup, and curaçao. I surmise that the original build used the citrus and curaçao to form the blue Materia itself, but for my version, I froze diluted blue curaçao into the center orb and kept the gin, acid, and syrup crystal clear around it.
That little change I find balances out the cocktail quite a bit. No matter how you decide to sip it's still a balanced drink. Sip it slowly and you get a clarified, tart Gimlet with potent notes of gin. Start breaking down your Materia, though, and the drink gradually becomes sweeter, softer, and more fruit-forward.
What do you think the other materia colors would taste like?
Blue Materia (modified)🔵💫
▷ Frozen Blue Curaçao Ball¹
▷ 0.5 oz (15 ml) 2:1 Citric/Malic Acid Solution²
▷ 0.25 oz (7.5 ml) Simple Syrup
▷ 2 oz (60 ml) Gin (Lawrenceville Distilling Ginzer)
Method: Stir all except blue curaçao with ice. Prepare a glass with the frozen curaçao ball, and carefully strain around it.

¹ Frozen Blue Curaçao Ball
▷ 1 part Blue Curaçao (Bols) @BOLSCOCKTAILS
▷ 3 parts Water
Method: Combine and freeze in spherical molds.
² Citric/Malic Acid Solution
▷ 6 oz (177 ml/g) Water
▷ 10g Citric Acid
▷ 5g Malic Acid
Method: Stir until completely dissolved.
