Xitang Water Town is located in Zhejiang province nearby Shanghai and a day trip from Hangzhou. Things to see here include 122 ancient lanes, 104 bridges, 9 rivers, Xitang's unique Wupeng boats, a temple or two, and a whole bunch of spiders.
I've compiled top Chinese ancient town rankings list from several different sources, including China Discovery, Top China Travel, China Educational Tours and more and averaged them out into one meta-ranking. Xitang is listed at 20, but I think it's underrated.
