Come aboard the USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30) for an in-depth tour of one of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Great Lakes icebreakers. We go below deck, inside the engine room, onto the bridge, and learn how the Mackinaw breaks ice and helps keep Great Lakes shipping lanes open during the winter.
Thanks to an invitation from Senior Chief Robert Bythewood and Chief Warrant Officer Ryan Finch, we were given a behind-the-scenes look at how this 240-foot, 3,500-ton Coast Guard cutter actually works.
The engineering is fascinating. The Mackinaw uses three massive marine-grade Caterpillar diesel engines, but those engines aren’t mechanically connected to the propellers. Instead, they drive generators capable of producing more than 9 megawatts of electricity, which powers the ship and its unique ABB Azipod electric propulsion system.
We take a closer look at the Mackinaw’s diesel-electric propulsion, Azipods, engine room, navigation and steering controls, bridge, icebreaking capabilities, and what it takes for the U.S. Coast Guard to operate a vessel like this on the Great Lakes.
Whether you’re interested in ships, Great Lakes freighters, icebreakers, marine engineering, diesel engines, Coast Guard cutters, ship engine rooms, Azipod propulsion, or simply how big ships work, this was an incredible opportunity to see parts of the Mackinaw most visitors don’t normally get to see.
