A new earthquake cluster near Antarctica is lighting up the South Sandwich Islands region, one of the most remote subduction zones on Earth. Deep and shallow quakes are striking near the South Sandwich Trench, Scotia Sea, Drake Passage and Weddell Sea, where the South American Plate dives beneath the South Sandwich microplate. This is the same remote region that produced the 2021 M8.1 earthquake and a tsunami signal recorded across multiple oceans.
