Katherine and Sheila Lyon ages 10 and 12, were abducted out of a Maryland shopping center in 1975. They were never seen again, and their bodies were never found. There was no DNA to link to anyone. Yet, in 2017, 42 years later, Lloyd Welch was convicted of their abduction, but not their murders).
So, how did this case get solved? At least to the satisfaction of the police?
I will explore the investigation and what the evidence was that caused Lloyd Welch to agree to a plea deal and spend the rest of his life in prison.
This case hits close to home to me as I spent time as a teen at that same Wheaton Shopping Center. I was also almost involved in profiling the case for one of the cold case detectives. Unfortunately, my participation got shot down by the higherups, not a surprise.
There is a documentary on the case on Investigation Discovery called "Who Killed the Lyon Sisters? It is good but I also got added facts from the book “The Last Stone” by Mark Bowden and court documents.
