Track 202: Lust

Kaine has returned to something resembling a 'normal' life. She is no longer possessed by Tyrann and lacks the powers the Shade imparted to her, but fortunately her unique genetic history gives her incredible physical strength and agility, and she is putting it to use doing what she does best: killing things.

Three months the aftermath of the assault on the Shadowlord's Castle, Kaine is left confused and uncertain. She is aware that something is wrong: she has no idea why Tyrann is no longer taunting her in her head, and can't shake the feeling that something is missing. A hollowness has formed inside her, and she attempts to fill the void through violence.

She's taken up residence just north of the Village, and has been subsisting by taking requests and payment to protect the Village from rogue Shade attacks. She's finishing one such mission when a man calls out to her and says she looks tired. Kaine brushes off the statement, and he compliments her strength. He's the client, incidentally; he pays her for her service and thanks her for everything she's done. He expresses hope that she'll help them again if they find the need, but Kaine simply walks away.

Although her walking away is not entirely from misanthropy and stoicism. The man is young, strong, tanned, and something about sets off some rather uncouth bells in Kaine's mind. She chooses to distance herself from him instead of giving in to those urges.

As she departs, the man's sister comes out of the village and asks if the Shades were taken care of. He says yes, and again thanks Kaine for her service, but the sister thinks she's frightening. The man seems to be somewhat smitten with Kaine, as he immediately dismisses his sister's concern and says there's no reason to think any of that: she's no longer possessed by a Shade so there's no reason to fear her, and after all she's done for the Village they should be grateful. He admits that he's sad that she still lives outside the Village, even though there's no reason to do so.

That night, Kaine is plagued by bad dreams, and can't understand why she's having these nightmares and what she's missing. Unfortunately, during her contemplations, she's interrupted by a sudden attack from Shades. She fights them off, but they continue their assault and she hears somebody from the Village scream. Kaine, realizing that the whole assault was a set-up by the Shades, tears through the remainder and rushes to the Village. She slaughters them, trying to work toward the Shades' target.

Unfortunately, she's too late; one of the northern houses was attacked, and the occupant -- her client from earlier -- was mortally injured. His sister is trying to save him, and tells him that Kaine was the one who kept the shades from killing her, too. This pleases the man, but unfortunately it's the last thing he hears. He dies from his injuries.

At that moment, Kaine barges into the house.

She's still in a frenzy from the battle, and with no more Shades to kill she has to sublimate her battle-lust somehow. She shoves the man's sister out of the way, apparently unaware of her own actions, muttering that no matter how many Shades she kills it's never enough, never enough, she can't fill the void, something is missing and people keep dying and it's useless and

the sound of fabric tearing
the sister screams
begs her to stop

Kaine returns to reality.

Horrified, she runs from the house and out of the Village, cursing herself as she goes.

Her flight takes her out beyond the Village, back to her on house, and she spies a Lunar Tear. She wonders why she starts crying whenever she sees one, wonders why it makes her hurt, why the hollowness is so painful...

She finally breaks down, demanding to know why she's behaving this way. Demanding to know what's missing. Demanding to know...
