Did you know that Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster initially began as a King Kong project titled Operation Robinson Crusoe: King Kong vs. Ebirah? The story would have followed a group of shipwrecked people who end up on a tropical island where Kong battles a giant sea monster. But by the time production began, Toho’s rights to use King Kong had expired, and they simply replaced him with Godzilla. Because of that last-minute swap, Godzilla acts strangely in this film—he’s revived by lightning, shows affection toward a woman, and behaves in ways that fit Kong far more than him. As a result,the movie’s fun lighthearted island adventure tone makes more sense when you realize it was never meant to be a Godzilla story in the first place.
