In this first of three lessons on the Lord’s Supper, we begin by laying the biblical and historical foundation necessary for understanding Chapter 30 of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith.
Before working through the confession itself, we will consider the setting of the Supper in Scripture, its connection to the Passover meal, the significance of bread and wine, the language of eating and drinking, and the way the early church understood and practiced this ordinance.
The goal is to allow Scripture and historical context to shape the categories we bring to the confession rather than reading our modern practices back into it.
This lesson serves as the foundation for Parts 2 and 3, where we will work directly through the teaching of the 1689 on the nature, purpose, and proper observance of the Lord’s Supper.
