The U.S. Army gradually phased out the CONEX (Container Express) system in the 1970s and 1980s, as modern ISO (International Organization for Standardization) containers became the global standard for logistics and transportation. The transition was driven by the need for compatibility with civilian and international shipping practices, which increasingly adopted the ISO container system.

Key Reasons for the Transition
1. Standardization: ISO containers provided standardized dimensions and handling equipment, making them compatible with commercial shipping infrastructure worldwide. The CONEX boxes, while innovative in their time, did not meet these global standards.
2. Increased Capacity: ISO containers, such as the 20-foot (TEU) and 40-foot (FEU) containers, offered significantly more capacity than the smaller CONEX boxes, which could only hold about 9,000 pounds.
3. Evolving Military Needs: The Army’s logistics requirements expanded to include larger volumes of equipment and supplies, particularly during large-scale operations in the late 20th century.
4. Interoperability: The adoption of ISO containers allowed the military to seamlessly integrate with civilian and allied supply chains, enhancing deployment efficiency.

Current Legacy of the CONEX

While the CONEX box is no longer in use, its concept influenced the development of modern military containers like the QUADCON, TRICON, and other specialized units designed for specific operational needs. Soldiers today often still refer to all containers, including ISO and these modern variants, as “connexes,” demonstrating the lasting impact of the original system.
