The Law of God (part 1) – 1689 Baptist Confession | Chapter 19

What is the role of God’s law in the life of a Christian?
If we are saved by grace alone, does the law still matter?
Or has it been set aside entirely?
In this lesson, we begin working through Chapter 19 of the 1689 Baptist Confession, examining the origin and divisions of God’s law. We will look at how the law was first given to Adam, how it was later codified at Sinai, and how Scripture distinguishes between the moral, ceremonial, and judicial laws.
This study helps us avoid two common errors:
legalism on one side and lawlessness on the other.

The law written on Adam’s heart
The covenant of works and Adam’s responsibility
The Ten Commandments as the summary of God’s moral law
The purpose and fulfillment of ceremonial laws in Christ
Why Israel’s judicial laws are no longer binding as civil law
How the principles of God’s law still apply today
This lesson is foundational for understanding how law and gospel relate, and how believers are to live in light of God’s unchanging standard of righteousness.
