When Christ Takes a City
Acts 19:1-20
What happens when Christ lays claim to a city?
In Acts 19, Paul arrives in Ephesus, one of the most influential cities in the Roman world. What follows is more than a series of unusual events. Luke is showing us the ongoing reign of Christ as He claims His people, exposes false religion, defeats the kingdom of darkness, and causes His Word to prevail.
Disciples of John are brought into the fullness of Christ. Extraordinary miracles testify to Christ’s authority. False exorcists are publicly humiliated. Former practitioners of magic abandon their old allegiances and burn their costly books in repentance.
Through it all, one truth stands above everything else:
The name of the Lord Jesus is exalted.
Acts 19 is not ultimately about miracles, tongues, or exorcisms. It is about the triumph of Christ as His kingdom advances and His Word prevails.
“So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.” — Acts 19:20
