In late August 1921, thousands of armed coal miners marched across southern West Virginia with one objective: reach Mingo County and free imprisoned union supporters. Standing in their way was a heavily armed force of deputies, mine guards, and volunteers led by Logan County Sheriff Don Chafin. Over several days, the two sides exchanged rifle fire across the ridges of Blair Mountain in what became the largest labor uprising in United States history and the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War. The fighting only ended after President Warren G. Harding ordered federal troops into the region.
This episode examines the events that led to the Battle of Blair Mountain, including the company town system, violent labor disputes, the Matewan Massacre, and the assassination of Sid Hatfield. It also explores how the battle unfolded, why the miners ultimately surrendered to federal troops, and how the conflict shaped the future of organized labor in America.
