Most if not all celestial bodies of the Kerbol system were at first misinterpreted as dust or grit on the lens of a telescope. The story of Mica is actually the opposite. Shortly after discovering Mica, the telescope used in the discovery was heavily examined and, sure enough, Mica was nothing more than a small bit of dirt on the lens. Still the scientists at KSC thought sending a mission would be the only definitive way to prove nothing was there. Using a different telescope simply never crossed their minds. Upon arriving at Mica's supposed location a great "gasp" arose from the scientific community. There floating majestically in front of all to see was a planet. Mica did exist. Re-examining of the faulty telescope revealed that (among other things) it was still faulty. Turns out that the telescope credited with the discovery only picked up a small dust pile that by chance was concealing a planet.
What a crazy random happenstance.
